Jakarta Police name four suspects in Quran recitation alcohol challenge case

Police in Jakarta have named four suspects following a controversial incident at The Sounds Project music festival in Ancol. The suspects, identified as RES, AK, I, and M, are accused of religious blasphemy after a challenge was issued to festival visitors involving Quranic recitation in exchange for alcohol.

According to Polda Metro Jaya, RES acted as the host at an alcohol brand booth, while AK and I allegedly challenged attendees to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas and Surah Ad-Dhuha to win a bottle of liquor. Suspect M was also involved, reportedly reciting Surah Ad-Dhuha through a loudspeaker. Two suspects, RES and AK, have been arrested and detained, while legal proceedings continue for the others.

The brand Newport, whose booth was the site of the interaction, issued an apology, stating the activity was a spontaneous act by visitors and not a planned promotion. However, consumer advocates have argued that using religious symbols to promote alcohol appears to be a deliberate act rather than mere negligence.
