Indonesian Court Rules Search and Arrest of Roy Suryo Illegal

On 7 July 2026, the South Jakarta District Court (PN Jaksel) issued a partial pre‑trial (praperadilan) ruling in favour of former minister Roy Suryo. Judge I Ketut Darpawan declared that the police search of Suryo’s home on 18 June 2026, his arrest on 19 June 2026, and the subsequent detention were unlawful and violated Indonesian law. The court dismissed the police actions as not in accordance with the required legal authorisations and ordered no court costs for the plaintiff.

Suryo had brought the case after being accused of defamation and alleged damage to the reputation of President Joko Widodo. The ruling challenges the procedural conduct of Polda Metro Jaya and may have broader implications for police powers in Indonesia.
