Jakarta speeds up Ciliwung river normalization, 62 homes cleared

The Jakarta provincial government announced that the land‑acquisition phase of the Ciliwung River normalization project in the Cawang district is progressing toward its 2026 deadline. Of the 170 households slated for relocation, 62 have completed compensation and demolition, while the remaining 108 are being processed for clearance by year‑end.

Governor Pramono Anung said the work will widen the river and construct a flood‑control bund, aiming to cut flood risk in the area by up to 40 %. The project covers 6.72 hectares, mostly in Cawang (5.89 ha) with a smaller section in Cililitan. Completion of land acquisition will allow construction to continue, improving water flow capacity during the rainy season.

The initiative is part of Jakarta’s broader strategy to reduce recurring floods by expanding river channels and reinforcing banks, with the goal of completing all land acquisition by the end of 2026.
