Jakarta's Air Quality Ranked Fourth Worst Worldwide on Friday Morning
Air quality monitoring by IQAir recorded Jakarta's AQI at 147 on Friday morning, placing the city fourth worst in the world and categorising the air as unhealthy for sensitive groups. Residents were advised to wear masks outdoors. The worst AQI was recorded in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (174), followed by Kampala, Uganda (154) and Lahore, Pakistan (151).
Jakarta's provincial government is implementing three main strategies to improve air quality: expanding Transjabodetabek bus routes such as Blok M‑Alam Sutera, Blok M‑PIK 2 and a planned Blok M‑Soekarno Hatta line; offering free public transport to 15 community groups; and targeting the operation of 10,000 electric TransJakarta buses by 2030. The transport sector currently accounts for about half of the city’s emissions. Additionally, the government is accelerating the construction of intermediate treatment facilities in Sunter, Rorotan, Bantargebang and West Jakarta, expected to become operational mid‑year.
