Jakarta's Historic Sites: From Colonial Land Deals to Legendary Eateries

Jakarta retains a vibrant culinary heritage, with long‑standing establishments such as Ragusa Es Italia (opened 1932) serving iconic spaghetti ice cream and Kopi Es Tak Kie (established 1927) offering traditional iced coffee. These venues, located in central districts like Menteng, Glodok and Petak Sembilan, continue to attract patrons despite competition from modern cafés, drawing visitors with historic décor and time‑tested recipes.

In the early 20th century, the colonial administration of Batavia (now Jakarta) considered the Menteng area for a public cemetery. In 1908 the city government negotiated the purchase of private land from the Shahab family, agreeing on a price of 310,000 guilders for roughly 295 blocks. While the purchase was partly motivated by the prospect of a new burial ground, the land was ultimately developed into an elite residential district, shaping Jakarta’s modern urban landscape.
