Jake Heyward returns to elite form, sets Welsh mile record ahead of Commonwealth Games

Welsh middle‑distance runner Jake Heyward made a notable comeback after undergoing double Achilles surgery in 2024. Unable to compete for about 20 months, he resumed training in January 2026 and, six months later, broke the Welsh mile record with a time of 3:46.73 at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in London. Heyward, who previously earned a European silver medal and competed at the Tokyo Olympics, said the experience felt "weird" but was thrilled to be back at a high level. Fellow Welsh athlete Charlotte Henrich also improved the national 400 m record at the same meet. Both athletes are targeting the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later in 2026, where Heyward will race the mile and Henrich will contest the 400 m.
