Jakob Ingebrigtsen plans return at 2026 European Championships in Birmingham
Norwegian middle‑ and long‑distance star Jakob Ingebrigtsen, a two‑time Olympic champion, announced his aim to compete at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, scheduled for 10‑16 August. He has not raced at any senior meet in 2026 after undergoing Achilles‑tendon surgery in February, performed in the United States, and spending the months since on rehabilitation.
Ingebrigtsen hinted at the comeback on Instagram, noting that Birmingham “is nice this time of year”. While he has not confirmed the exact event, the 5000 metre distance is considered the most likely option; the 1500 metre is also possible, where he could meet Scotland’s Josh Kerr. The athlete previously secured the 1500 m/5000 m double at the last three editions of the European Championships – Berlin 2018, Munich 2022 and Rome 2024. His most recent major appearance was at the World Championships in Tokyo, where he finished tenth in the 5000 m and failed to advance beyond the heats in the 1500 m.
