Jakob Ingebrigtsen returns to competition at European Athletics Championships
Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen is set to make his competitive return in the 5,000 meters at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The Norwegian runner has faced a challenging period following Achilles tendon surgery and a recent bout of influenza, marking his first competitive appearance in nearly eleven months.
Ingebrigtsen will face competition from Tuomas Heikkilä, a Finnish orienteering star and World Championship bronze medalist. Heikkilä, who has been leading the orienteering World Cup, has chosen to compete in the 5,000m final instead of pursuing the orienteering title against Kasper Fosser.
Heikkilä, who holds a personal best of 13:25.85, expressed hope for a fast-paced race and noted that while he is competitive in the final kilometers, he anticipates difficulty matching the elite sprint speeds of the top runners in the final lap.
