Jakov Jozinović responds to boycott calls over Thompson song

Croatian singer Jakov Jozinović has issued a public statement following a regional controversy sparked by a two-year-old video of him performing a song by Marko Perković Thompson. The footage, recorded when Jozinović was 19, has led to calls for boycotts and petitions in Serbia demanding he be banned from performing in the country, specifically ahead of his scheduled concerts at the Belgrade Arena.

Jozinović addressed the backlash on Instagram, stating, “I am a musician, not a politician,” and emphasized that he never intended to offend anyone based on nationality, religion, or race. He acknowledged the historical sensitivity of certain songs in the Balkans but maintained that respecting his own heritage does not imply disrespect toward others.

The situation has drawn diverse reactions from regional celebrities. Serbian singer Milica Todorović defended him, noting that as a Croatian, it is legitimate for him to sing Croatian songs. Conversely, Jelena Karleuša suggested the controversy might involve “foreign services” and advocated for reciprocity regarding regional performers. Other figures, including Džejla Ramović, have also expressed support or reacted to the ongoing debate.
