Poland Constitutional Court crisis triggers police deployment and presidential return
A major institutional crisis has erupted in Poland following the suspension of Constitutional Court President Bogdan Święczkowski and Deputy Bartłomiej Sochanjski. The suspension, announced via the court’s website and attributed to Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, has led to accusations of a “coup d’état” from the court itself and opposition leaders.
Police were deployed to the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw to manage protests and ensure security following reports of threats against judges and the throwing of objects at officers. Three individuals were reportedly detained during the unrest. The conflict stems from a long-standing dispute regarding judicial appointments and the government’s efforts to restore the rule of law.
President Karol Nawrocki interrupted an official visit to Senegal, turning his plane around over Spanish airspace to return to Poland. Following his arrival, reports indicated a physical confrontation occurred as the President attempted to enter the court building. Prime Minister Donald Tusk defended the government’s actions, stating that restoring the rule of law is a necessary and decisive duty.
