Jakub Wiech accused of plagiarism in doctoral dissertation
The Centre for Eastern Studies (OSW) has accused journalist Jakub Wiech of plagiarism in his doctoral dissertation, titled ‘The Impact of European Union Institutions and Law on the Security of the Natural Gas Market in Poland in the Years 2004–2019’. OSW released a comparative table alleging that approximately 2.5% of the work consists of verbatim fragments from the institution’s previous analyses, specifically those authored by Agata Łoskot-Strachota, Kamil Kłysiński, and Wojciech Konończuk.
Following the defense of the dissertation at the University of Warsaw, the doctoral committee failed to grant the degree. The vote resulted in three votes in favor, three against, and four abstentions, meaning the required absolute majority was not met.
Jakub Wiech has responded to the allegations on social media, stating that the committee was aware of the claims prior to the defense and that he had addressed them by noting a failure to properly cite the material. He noted that he has since requested access to the anti-plagiarism report from his supervisor.
