Brvenica by-election: VLEN names Jakup Huseini as mayoral candidate

The political race for the Brvenica Municipality mayoral by-election, scheduled for October 18, 2026, has begun to take shape. The VLEN coalition has officially announced Jakup Huseini as its candidate. Huseini, a Master of Laws and current civil servant within the municipality, is being promoted for his professional experience and direct familiarity with local administrative procedures and resident needs.

The by-election follows the sudden death of Mayor Ivica Ilievski on June 23, 2026.

Other political entities have also entered the race. The Democratic Union for Integration (BDI), representing the Alliance for National Integration (AKI) coalition, has nominated Arkin Jahiji. While the Alliance for Albanians supports Jahiji, the Albanian League has expressed regret over the lack of a unified candidate between VLEN and BDI, describing the contest as a partisan battle rather than a unified effort for the Albanian majority in the municipality.
