Jal Jeevan Mission shows mixed implementation across India

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is seeing varied implementation results across different Indian regions. In Jammu and Kashmir, the mission is currently behind schedule, with only 46 per cent of the 3,253 sanctioned schemes physically completed. While 1,784 projects remain pending, rural household tap-water coverage in the territory has increased from 31 per cent to 81 per cent. The government aims to provide connections to 19.26 lakh rural households through JJM 2.0, with a pending financial balance estimated at Rs 6,296 crore.

In contrast, a Rs 49.94-crore protected drinking water project has been completed in the A Konduru mandal of Andhra Pradesh's NTR district. Part of the JJM-Amarajeevi Jaladhara programme, the project provides safe drinking water to approximately 75,000 people across 21 gram panchayats and 38 habitations. The initiative, which includes a 130-km pipeline network, is expected to mitigate health risks, such as chronic kidney disease, previously associated with contaminated water in the region.
