Jalen Duren and Detroit Pistons stalled in contract talks

Contract negotiations between center Jalen Duren and the Detroit Pistons remain at an impasse as the October 1 deadline for a qualifying offer approaches. The Pistons have reportedly offered a five-year deal worth approximately $35 million per season, while Duren’s camp is seeking an agreement exceeding $40 million per year.

The gap in valuation is significant, potentially totaling a difference of $25 million to $30 million over the life of a contract. If an agreement is not reached, Duren could play the upcoming season under a $9.6 million qualifying offer, which would allow him to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027.

Duren’s value follows a strong regular season where he averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, earning a spot on the All-NBA Third Team. However, his performance dipped during the playoffs, where he averaged 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds. The Pistons are currently managing tight financial constraints, having already secured a supermax extension for Cade Cunningham and working toward a long-term deal for Ausar Thompson.
