Jalisco authorities monitor seismic and volcanic activity

The Jalisco State Civil Protection and Firefighters Unit is maintaining permanent monitoring of seismic and volcanic activity due to the region's location within the Pacific Ring of Fire. Experts noted that the area is a convergence point for the North American, Rivera, and Cocos tectonic plates.

During a press conference regarding the Second National Drill 2026, specialists addressed the 'Jalisco Block,' a tectonic structure delimited by the Colima and Zacoalco grabens. Carlos Suárez Placencia clarified that while these structures are geologically active and evolve over millions of years, there is currently no immediate process of territorial separation occurring.

The state is coordinating with the University of Colima, the UNAM Institute of Geosciences, and the National Seismological Service to share real-time data. In preparation for the national drill scheduled for September 19, authorities highlighted the importance of preparedness for potential high-magnitude seismic events.
