Jalisco develops new religious pilgrimage routes

Authorities and community organizers in Jalisco are developing new religious pilgrimage routes to promote cultural tourism and preserve spiritual traditions.

One proposal focuses on a 54-kilometer route in Los Altos de Jalisco, connecting Lagos de Moreno, Mesa Redonda, Agua del Obispo, and San Juan de los Lagos. The project, led by José Isabel Martínez Padilla through the 'Unidos por el Camino' initiative, seeks an investment of approximately 2.47 million pesos to install wayfinding markers, kilometer posts, directional signs, and interpretive maps to improve safety and navigation for walkers.

Separately, the Government of Jalisco is working on 'El Camino de San Máximo Confesor,' a 350-kilometer pedestrian route stretching from Guadalajara to the Monastery of San Máximo Confesor in San Cristóbal de la Barranca. This route passes through 14 municipalities and is designed to be completed over 15 days. Notably, it is intended to be the only route in Latin America sistered with the Camino de Santiago in Spain, allowing pilgrims to begin the official credential stamping process in Mexico before traveling to Europe.
