Jalisco formalizes Mexico's first degree in Mexican Music

The government of Jalisco has formalized the first Bachelor's Degree in Mexican Music in Mexico, specializing in Mariachi and Regional Heritage. This academic program received Official Recognition of Validity of Studies (RVOE) following an agreement between the Jalisco Secretariat of Culture and the Secretariat of Innovation, Science, and Technology (SICyT).

Based at the Escuela Regional del Mariachi in the municipality of Cocula, the program is scheduled to begin in August 2027. The curriculum will span eight semesters and is designed for musicians with existing experience. Coursework will include solfège, history, vocal training, piano, and the interpretation of instruments such as the guitar, guitarrón, vihuela, violin, and trumpet.

The inaugural class is expected to consist of approximately 30 students. By obtaining an official degree, graduates will be eligible for professional certification, postgraduate studies, and academic or labor opportunities requiring higher education credentials.
