Mexico and Jalisco announce $1.34 billion water infrastructure investment

The Mexican federal government and the state of Jalisco have announced a joint investment of approximately 25 billion pesos (1.34 billion dollars) to address water supply and quality issues in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the federal government will contribute 14.5 billion pesos, while Jalisco will provide 10.2 billion pesos.

The funds are earmarked for several major projects, including the construction of the 42 km Chapala-Guadalajara aqueduct, the Calderón-San Gaspar aqueduct, and the expansion of the San Gaspar water treatment plant. Additionally, the state will invest in renovating the Miravalle water treatment plant and improving the sanitation of the Las Pintas dam and canal.

Governor Pablo Lemus emphasized that this joint investment aims to resolve long-standing supply shortages and contamination issues without increasing public debt or privatizing services. Construction on the new aqueducts is expected to begin in early 2027, with a projected duration of approximately two years.
