Guadalajara water protests lead to clashes and 39 detentions

A large-scale protest in Guadalajara, Jalisco, regarding contaminated water supply escalated into violent clashes between citizens and state police on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Thousands of demonstrators marched from La Minerva to Casa Jalisco, the official residence of Governor Pablo Lemus, to demand clean water after months of reports involving turbidity, bad odors, and contamination with heavy metals and fecal matter.

Clashes erupted when protesters attempted to bypass security barriers at Casa Jalisco. Police responded with tear gas and high-pressure water cannons. The official death toll was not reported, but authorities stated 39 people were detained and 28 police officers were injured, including two seriously. Various reports indicate dozens of civilians were also injured.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the use of force, stating, “We do not agree with the repression,” and demanded that Governor Lemus clarify the reasons for the police deployment and provide the identities of those detained. Sheinbaum also rejected potential privatization of water services.

Governor Lemus has ordered an investigation into possible police misconduct and has released 12 of the detainees. Meanwhile, the SIAPA water system is implementing a rotation scheme to manage the crisis, which is expected to affect approximately 40% of the service area.
