Mexico has commenced its federal electoral process for the 2026-2027 cycle, a massive undertaking involving the renewal of 500 federal deputies, 17 governorships, and numerous local congresses and municipal offices. The National Electoral Institute (INE) projects a nominal list of over 102 million voters and the installation of more than 176,000 polling stations.

Security remains a primary concern due to the influence of organized crime. The INE has acknowledged threats including armed intimidation, pressure on candidates, and the potential for illicit campaign financing. Data from projects like ‘Votar entre balas’ indicate thousands of recorded threats, murders, and kidnappings targeting political figures between 2019 and mid-2026.

In specific regions like Jalisco, electoral authorities report that security conditions are being monitored in coordination with law enforcement to protect personnel in the field. Meanwhile, in Veracruz, registration efforts are underway for 17-year-olds to obtain voter IDs in preparation for the 2027 intermediate elections.
