JAMA outlines roadmap for autonomous driving infrastructure

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) has unveiled a roadmap to establish a transportation system based on autonomous driving, aiming to achieve both ‘zero traffic fatalities’ and ‘freedom of movement.’

JAMA distinguishes between competitive and collaborative areas. While manufacturers will continue to compete in developing autonomous AI and End-to-End (E2E) technologies, they will collaborate on three key pillars: infrastructure cooperation, social foundation establishment, and market penetration of technology.

To enhance safety and traffic flow, JAMA plans to build an ‘information control platform’ that integrates road infrastructure, communication networks, and public information. This project will move through a proof-of-concept phase in 2026, construction in 2027, and widespread implementation starting in 2028.

Furthermore, the association aims to create a governance framework to independently verify accidents, investigate causes, and manage victim relief by 2030. To support market adoption, JAMA will work on certifying safety systems and coordinating with tax and insurance sectors to encourage the use of advanced autonomous technologies.
