Jamaal Howard executed in Texas via lethal injection

Jamaal Howard, 46, was executed via lethal injection of pentobarbital at the Huntsville State Prison in Texas. Howard was convicted in 2001 for the aggravated murder of Vickie Swartout during a convenience store robbery in Silsbee.

Before his death, Howard addressed the victim's family, who were present at the execution, to ask for forgiveness and offer apologies. His legal team had filed multiple appeals to halt the execution, arguing that Howard suffered from intellectual disabilities and citing risks associated with the drug used, following a recent failed execution in Tennessee.

This marks the first execution in the United States since a botched procedure involving Christa Pike in Tennessee last week. In that instance, Pike unexpectedly regained consciousness six days after being placed in a coma following a lethal injection attempt. Legal challenges regarding the use of pentobarbital and the protocols of lethal injections continue to face scrutiny following these events.
