Jamaica advances relocation for Coopers Pen residents
The Jamaican government is accelerating relocation efforts for residents of Coopers Pen in Trelawny ahead of a November 30 deadline to vacate the property. The Ministry of Economic Growth and Infrastructure Development is actively assisting affected households, following a demolition exercise in August that displaced several residents.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that eligible residents will receive government-funded relocation grants to ensure a smooth and dignified transition. To support vulnerable individuals in extreme emergency situations who lack immediate alternative housing, a decanting site has been prepared for temporary use.
On September 19, the government relocated 19 households at a cost of approximately $10 million. While focusing on relocation, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to respect the rule of law, protect property rights, and ensure the frugal use of taxpayer funds. The Ministry stated it will not intervene in private land repossession matters or court rulings, recommending that all affected households comply with the relocation deadline.
