Jamaica expands digital literacy and engagement programs for seniors

Jamaica’s Ministry of Labour and Social Security is expanding initiatives to promote the active engagement and digital inclusion of senior citizens. During the launch of Senior Citizens’ Month, Portfolio Minister Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr. announced plans to enroll an additional 400 seniors in digital literacy training by the end of the year. This follows the successful completion of the program by 283 citizens across various parishes, including St. James, Kingston, and St. Ann.

Minister Charles emphasized that social protection must move beyond immediate needs like food and medical support to include opportunities for personal development and meaningful engagement. He highlighted programs such as the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) Spelling Bee Competition as vital tools for preventing isolation and challenging age-related perceptions.

NCSC Board Chair Dr. Julian McKoy Davis noted that there are currently 522 Jamaicans over the age of 100, urging the younger generation to engage with the wisdom of older adults to prevent emotional and mental isolation.
