Jamaica Justice Minister announces plans for eight new courthouses

Jamaica's Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has expressed disappointment regarding the slow pace of courthouse development over the last 11 years. Speaking at the Judiciary of Jamaica’s 2026 Strategic Management Retreat, Chuck noted that many existing facilities are in need of replacement.

To address the shortage, the government plans to open eight new courthouses nationwide within the next two to three years. Four of these projects will be funded through the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NaRRA), following damage caused by Hurricane Melissa. These specific locations include Westmoreland, St. Elizabeth, Trelawny, and St. Ann.

Additionally, plans are underway to construct courts in Manchester, St. Catherine, and a new Supreme Court using public-private partnerships (PPPs). Chuck urged judicial administration divisions to maintain current buildings to ensure proceedings continue in suitable environments while new infrastructure is developed.
