Jamaica marks Independence Day and heritage celebrations following Hurricane Melissa

Jamaica is observing its first Independence Day since Hurricane Melissa struck the island, the strongest storm in modern Caribbean history. The cyclone left dozens dead, damaged hospitals, destroyed homes and caused widespread power outages. Community resilience has been highlighted by diaspora members in the UK, Canada and the United States, who have sent food, money and other aid to support recovery.

In parallel, Jamaica continues its annual National Heritage Week, a series of cultural events organized by the Jamaica Cultural Development Committee. The week, which runs in October, features concerts, heritage‑focused school activities and public celebrations that reinforce national identity and pride.
