Jamaica marks Independence Day with community flag ceremony and national Grand Gala

On August 6, residents of Mona Heights gathered for the community’s annual Independence Day flag‑raising ceremony. Organized by the Mona Heights Neighbourhood Watch, Citizens Association and the Lions Club, the event was held under the sub‑theme “Authentic Jamaican Energy” and the national theme “United in Celebrating Resilience”. The programme featured a community breakfast, cultural entertainment including Maypole dancers, a performance by reggae veteran Roy Rayon, a keynote address by PhD candidate Andrew Johnson and health information from the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

Later that evening, the national Grand Gala celebrated Jamaica’s 64th year of independence. Minister of Culture Olivia Grange announced a showcase with more than 1,800 participants, reggae‑icon tributes, a guard of honour by the Combined Cadet Corps, and the hoisting of the flag by women of the Jamaica Defence Force marking their 50th anniversary. The gala also highlighted Kingston’s 10‑year UNESCO Creative City of Music status. Reggae Icon awards were presented to Busy Signal and Wayne Wonder by Prime Minister Andrew Holness. The celebration concluded with a synchronized drone display and fireworks, with additional viewing arranged in Independence Village for those unable to attend the stadium.
