Jamaica medical doctors threaten strike over overtime pay dispute

The Jamaica Medical Doctors’ Association (JMDA) has issued an ultimatum to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT), demanding a ruling on a long-standing overtime pay dispute by October 2. The disagreement centers on doctors being compensated at 2021 rates for overtime worked, a matter that has been under review since April. The JMDA warned that failure to meet this deadline could lead to industrial action, potentially disrupting public healthcare services across the island.

The IDT has responded by urging patience, stating that while it aims to deliver awards promptly, complex matters require extensive review. The tribunal noted that while the law provides for awards within 21 days, it is often impracticable due to scheduling and unexpected delays. The IDT expressed a commitment to delivering fair rulings to maintain industrial harmony.

In response to the potential strike, the Association of Government Medical Consultants (AGMC) stated its members are prepared to assist with healthcare services to mitigate the impact on patients, despite limited manpower. Public reaction in Jamaica remains divided; some citizens sympathize with the doctors' financial grievances, while others express concern regarding the impact of service disruptions on patient care. The Health Ministry is reportedly on standby to manage any potential impact.
