Jamaica petitions King Charles III for legal ruling on slavery reparations
A Jamaican delegation, led by Culture Minister Olivia Grange, has formally petitioned King Charles III to refer three legal questions regarding the transatlantic slave trade to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. The petition seeks a judicial opinion on whether the forced transportation and enslavement of Africans in Jamaica was lawful under English law, whether it violated international law, and whether the United Kingdom has a legal obligation to provide reparatory remedies.
The filing, timed to coincide with the anniversary of the 1781 Zong massacre, marks a significant shift from political advocacy to a formal legal challenge within the British judicial system. While Jamaica has estimated potential reparations at approximately US$10 billion, the petition currently seeks legal clarity rather than an immediate demand for payment.
The British government has rejected the prospect of paying financial reparations, maintaining its longstanding position despite acknowledging the abhorrent nature of colonial practices. King Charles III was in Scotland at the time of the petition's delivery and, as Jamaica's head of state, acts on the advice of his ministers regarding such constitutional matters.
