Jamaica petitions King Charles III over slavery reparations
A Jamaican government delegation, led by Culture Minister Olivia Grange, is traveling to the United Kingdom to file a formal petition with King Charles III regarding reparations for the transatlantic slave trade. The petition requests that the King refer three pivotal legal questions to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council: whether the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica was legal under English common law, whether it violated international law, and whether the United Kingdom holds a legal obligation to provide redress. While the petition is not an immediate demand for payment, the results could determine future legal and financial steps.
In addition to the reparations petition, the delegation plans to meet with British Museum officials to discuss the repatriation of cultural artefacts taken during the colonial era, including sacred Taino objects. The initiative follows historical context in which the British government paid £20 million to slave owners upon abolition in 1833, with the loans for those payments only being fully repaid by Britain in 2015.
