Jamaica PM Holness to consider Firearms Act improvements

Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated that the Jamaican government and Parliament will consider recommendations to improve the Firearms Act at an appropriate time. The announcement follows protests and lobbying by attorneys who are seeking amendments to the Act, specifically targeting mandatory sentencing provisions and restrictions on judicial discretion. Justice Minister Delroy Chuck has met with representatives regarding these concerns.

Dr. Holness emphasized that while the administration is open to suggestions, the law’s effectiveness against illegal firearms must be preserved. He noted that a five-year review period for the legislation is approaching, at which point the executive and Parliament will evaluate potential improvements.

The Prime Minister also highlighted a significant decline in violent crime, noting that murders have decreased by 23 percent this year, following a 43 percent decline last year. He cautioned that advocacy for legal reviews should not undermine the current gains in citizen security.
