Jamaica shifts position on Western Sahara autonomy plan
Jamaica has updated its diplomatic stance regarding the Western Sahara, stating that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute ‘one of the most feasible solutions.’ This shift was announced on September 23, 2026, in New York following meetings between Jamaican Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
A joint communiqué expressed support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which reaffirms support for the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy to facilitate negotiations based on the Moroccan autonomy initiative. The statement also commended Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to build international consensus around the 2007 plan, which proposes significant autonomy for the southern provinces under Moroccan national sovereignty.
In addition to the Sahara issue, both ministers agreed to continue political consultations and coordinate positions on matters of mutual interest to deepen bilateral dialogue within multilateral institutions.
