Jamaica to expand museum network to preserve national history

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced plans to expand Jamaica’s museum network to better preserve the nation’s history and identity. Speaking at the opening of the Alpha Mercy Historical Centre in Kingston, Holness emphasized that preserving historical buildings, documents, and traditions is a national priority and an investment in education and national confidence.

The proposed expansion includes a national museum in Morant Bay, a museum in Port Royal, and a facility in western Jamaica dedicated to National Hero Sam Sharpe and the Christmas War. Holness also noted the potential for a dedicated music museum and a sports museum to ensure young Jamaicans can learn about the country’s development and the individuals who shaped it.
