Jamaica: UK visa fees waived for Privy Council legal proceedings

Jamaican appellants and their legal counsel appearing before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) in London can now obtain UK visas free of charge. This new “gratis visa route” was established through a collaboration between the JCPC, the UK Home Office, and the Ministry of Justice.

The initiative aims to facilitate access to justice by removing the financial burden of visa application fees, which has been a practical concern for Jamaican litigants and legal professionals for over two decades. Under the new process, legal teams must use the JCPC portal to identify individuals attending in person. The court will then verify their connection to the case and provide an invitation letter to facilitate the application.

While the application fees are waived, all applicants must still undergo standard security and database checks. The waiver applies specifically to appellants, respondents, and their legal teams; family members or other accompanying persons are not eligible for the fee waiver and must follow standard visa procedures.
