Jamaican entertainers clash with PM Holness over disaster relief
Prominent Jamaican reggae and dancehall artists, including Beenie Man and Buju Banton, have entered a dispute with Prime Minister Andrew Holness regarding the management of Hurricane Melissa relief funds.
The conflict arose after Beenie Man criticized the administration’s distribution of millions of dollars in donations intended for citizens devastated by the hurricane. He also raised concerns that coastal development might jeopardize the livelihoods of those dependent on the island’s beaches.
Prime Minister Holness responded by accusing certain entertainers of using the Jamaican flag to sell tickets abroad while simultaneously “tearing down the country.” Buju Banton defended the music community, stating that artists represent “Brand Jamaica” through their hard work and credibility rather than merely waving a flag.
