Jamaican entertainers dispute Prime Minister Holness over role in national image
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has sparked debate regarding the role of entertainers in representing Jamaica internationally. During the reopening of Black River Hospital, Holness suggested that some performers benefit from the country’s global image, referred to as ‘Brand Jamaica,’ while simultaneously damaging its reputation through public criticism of the nation.
Reggae and dancehall artist Buju Banton responded to these remarks on social media, arguing that an artist’s international audience is a result of their work and credibility rather than the use of national symbols. He maintained that Jamaican artists have been promoting the country long before the current administration.
The Jamaica Federation of Musicians and Affiliates Union (JFMAU) also issued a statement defending cultural practitioners. The union argued that patriotism should not be equated with silence and that raising concerns about governance, transparency, and disaster relief is a vital part of a healthy democracy. The JFMAU emphasized that music and culture are fundamental pillars of Jamaica’s economy and national identity.
