Jamaican legal associations and government agree to review Firearms Act
The Jamaican Bar Association (JAMBAR) and the Advocates’ Association of Jamaica (AAJ) have reached an agreement with the government to review the Firearms Act. The legal groups have previously protested the rigidity of the current legislation, specifically regarding mandatory minimum sentences and provisions for individuals found with imitation guns.
During a recent meeting, the Prime Minister and his ministerial team acknowledged concerns regarding the need for legislative refinement. The legal associations emphasized that statutory frameworks must include safety valves and exceptions to preserve judicial discretion, which they argue is essential for proportional sentencing and upholding constitutional protections.
Key outcomes from the meeting include a directive for the Law Reform Committee to prioritize the review and reform of the Act. Additionally, JAMBAR and the AAJ will lead public sensitization initiatives to educate citizens on the legal implications of the proposed reforms, while maintaining a commitment to continued consultative dialogue with the government.
