Jamaican opposition claims municipal subvention $473 million per month, challenges minister's $600‑$700 million estimate
Opposition Spokesperson on Local Government Natalie Neita Garvey announced that the average monthly subvention for all municipal corporations in Jamaica is about $473 million. She said this figure is far lower than the $600‑$700 million per month cited by Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie, who had argued the higher amount covered road and infrastructure maintenance. Garvey accused the minister of inflating the numbers, called for the government to publish a full breakdown of the allocations, and noted that some corporations are still awaiting funds needed for hurricane‑season drain cleaning. The statements were made at a press conference in St Andrew after McKenzie's presentation to an area council.
