Jamaican storytelling sees rise on global screens
Jamaican stories are experiencing a surge in visibility across global television and film platforms. Recent productions explore diverse themes including crime noir, migration, colonialism, and faith, moving beyond traditional depictions of the island.
A significant shift in this trend is the increasing involvement of Jamaican creators in directing their own narratives. Notable examples include Booker Prize-winning novelist Marlon James, who created the HBO and Channel 4 series ‘Get Millie Black’, and director Storm Saulter, who directed ‘Possession’.
These productions are reaching major international platforms such as HBO, Hulu, Tubi, and Sky, while local productions are also seeing success at the Jamaican box office.
