James A. Robinson discusses pathways to 8% economic growth

At the Prasasti Indonesia Policy Forum 2026, 2024 Nobel Laureate in Economics James A. Robinson discussed the rarity of achieving 8% annual economic growth. Robinson identified three primary pathways for such growth: miracle economies characterized by long-term structural transformation (such as Japan, South Korea, and Singapore), resource-based economies that successfully add value to natural wealth (such as Oman and Saudi Arabia), and those that fail to sustain growth due to fluctuating commodity prices and lack of diversification (such as Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan).

In a related effort to bolster Indonesia's economy, Deputy Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Dradjad Hari Wibowo outlined conditions to reach a 6% growth target in 2027 and 8% in the medium term. These conditions include ensuring investment growth outpaces GDP, increasing productivity, enhancing value-added exports through logistics efficiency, and developing the sharia economy. Wibowo emphasized the importance of government-private sector cooperation and the potential of the global sharia financial market to increase national competitiveness.
