James Anderson faces retirement after Lancashire contract decision
Veteran fast bowler James Anderson may retire from professional cricket at age 44 after Lancashire County Cricket Club decided not to offer him a contract for the 2027 season. The decision follows a leadership restructuring at the club, with new chief executive Richard Kenyon and director of cricket Paul Farbrace overseeing a departmental reset.
Despite Lancashire’s recent struggles, including a second-to-bottom finish in Division Two of the County Championship, Anderson maintained strong individual performance. During the 2026 campaign, he took 50 wickets at an average of 17.68.
Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker with 704 Test wickets, has represented Lancashire since 2002. Reports suggest he may choose to retire from the sport entirely rather than seeking a contract with a different county.
