James Anderson to leave Lancashire after 25-year career
Lancashire Cricket Club has confirmed it will not renew the contract of veteran fast bowler James Anderson for the 2027 season, ending his 25-year association with the club. The decision was communicated to the 44-year-old during a meeting on October 19 with new director of cricket Paul Farbrace and chief executive Richard Kenyon.
Anderson, England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, expressed disappointment regarding the departure on social media, stating, “If it was up to me it wouldn’t have ended like this.” He noted that playing for his boyhood club and captaining the side at Old Trafford were significant honors. While the club is moving in a new direction, Farbrace praised Anderson as “without doubt the greatest bowler Lancashire and England have produced.”
The club's decision follows a difficult season in which Lancashire finished second-bottom in Division Two of the County Championship. The leadership team aims to rebuild the squad to secure promotion and challenge for the Division One title over the next few years. Anderson has not yet confirmed whether he will retire from all cricket or seek a contract with another county.
