James Cody Bryant pleads not guilty to conspiracy in Tumbler Ridge shooting
James Cody Bryant, 30, pleaded not guilty on October 22 in a Seattle federal court to charges of conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country. Bryant, who also goes by the name Melody, is accused of colluding with Jesse Van Rootselaar, the individual responsible for the mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on February 10.
According to the indictment, Bryant allegedly provided advice on attack locations and weaponry, sent money for a lighter to be used in an improvised explosive device, and agreed to record and livestream the attack. Bryant reportedly tested the livestream capabilities in January 2026.
The shooting resulted in eight deaths, including five students and an educational assistant, as well as 27 injuries. Van Rootselaar died from a self-inflicted wound during the incident. Bryant remains in custody after being denied bail, and a trial is scheduled for December 21.
