James Cameron Maps Out Future of Avatar Franchise and His Career's Final Act

Director James Cameron, 71, reflected on his "last act" while receiving Canada’s Governor General Performing Arts Award. He said he is still undecided about directing Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, whose release dates remain tentative for December 2029 and December 2031, and he may shift to writing or producing instead.

Cameron emphasized that any future project must "do the most good" and improve conditions for future generations. He listed potential non‑Avatar projects such as Ghosts of Hiroshima, The Devils, a new Terminator film, Fantastic Voyage and other ideas.

The Avatar saga, which began in 2005, has generated billions at the box office, though the latest installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), earned about $1.4 billion worldwide—significantly less than the first two films. Disney continues to evaluate how to produce the next sequels more efficiently and cost‑effectively.
