James Cameron Mulls Dropping Avatar 4 and 5 as Disney Delays Decision

Director James Cameron has indicated that the planned sequels Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 may not move forward. Disney has set tentative release windows for the films in 2029 and 2031 but has not formally green‑lit production. The latest installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), earned about $1.4 billion worldwide, a drop from the original’s $2.9 billion and the sequel’s $2.3 billion, prompting concerns about the franchise’s profitability.

Cameron described this period as the “last act” of his career, weighing whether to continue the saga or focus on other projects such as the adaptation of Ghosts of Hiroshima and a medieval‑style fantasy titled Diables. He is also considering shortening the production schedule and reducing costs for the next two films, but no final decision has been announced.
