James Cameron reveals ‘Aliens’ depended on Sigourney Weaver

Director James Cameron has revealed that his decision to write and direct the 1986 film ‘Aliens’ was contingent upon Sigourney Weaver reprising her role as Ellen Ripley. In a 2022 interview with GQ, Cameron noted that while he faced advice against taking the project, his primary motivation was working with Weaver. He stated that once he was assured she was an option for the sequel, he proceeded to write the film.

‘Aliens’ serves as a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 film ‘Alien’. While the original is often characterized as a ‘haunted house movie in space’ focused on establishing mood and tension, Cameron’s sequel is noted for its faster pace and action-oriented approach, shifting the genre toward a war film. The sequel was a significant commercial success, earning approximately $157 million at the global box office in 1986 and receiving high critical acclaim.
