Democratic strategist James Carville has proposed a scenario in which President Donald Trump resigns following potential Republican defeats in the 2026 midterm elections.

Carville suggested that if Democrats retake control of Congress, leadership could approach Trump with a deal: he would step down before his term ends in 2029 in exchange for not pursuing the clawback of billions of dollars in allegedly misappropriated funds. Carville also noted that a resignation could allow Vice President JD Vance to provide a presidential pardon for federal prosecutions.

The strategist argued that a Republican loss would shift political loyalty and that Trump might be incentivized to “throw up a white flag” to secure legal protections and financial stability.
