James Copenhaver, survivor of 2024 Trump rally shooting, dies

James Copenhaver, a 76-year-old veteran and survivor of the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on Donald Trump, has died. He passed away on a Wednesday at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, surrounded by his family.

Copenhaver was one of several attendees wounded during the shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He sustained two gunshot wounds, striking his left triceps and his abdomen, which resulted in a transection of his colon and permanent nerve damage. For nearly two years, he lived with lingering complications, including bullet fragments remaining in his body and the need to use a cane for mobility.

Donald Trump described Copenhaver as a “true American patriot” and expressed his condolences to Copenhaver’s wife, Marianne. House Republicans also issued a statement honoring his strength and perseverance in the face of his injuries. Prior to his death, Copenhaver and his wife had filed a lawsuit against the federal government, alleging that the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security failed to provide adequate security during the event.
