James Copenhaver dies from injuries sustained in 2024 Trump rally shooting

James Copenhaver, 76, has died from complications related to injuries sustained during the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. His death was confirmed by Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday and his family’s attorney.

Copenhaver was one of several spectators struck by gunfire when Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop during a campaign rally. He had survived the initial attack but suffered severe, lasting injuries, including nerve damage and internal wounds such as a transection of his colon. These complications eventually led to his death in a hospital on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

The 2024 shooting also resulted in the death of former fire chief Corey Comperatore and injuries to attendee David Dutch. The incident remains a significant point of discussion regarding security protocols at major political events.
