James Dean Memorial Highway designated in California
A segment of Highway 46 in Cholame, California, has been officially renamed the James Dean Memorial Highway. The designation honors the Hollywood icon 71 years after his fatal car accident.
On September 30, 1955, the 24-year-old actor was driving his Porsche 550 Spyder toward a race in Salinas with passenger Rolf Wutherich when he collided with a Ford Tudor driven by Donald Turnupseed. The crash occurred near the intersection of Highway 41 and Highway 46.
Caltrans officials, local leaders, and members of Dean's family attended the dedication ceremony. Officials stated the designation is intended to serve as both a tribute and a call to action regarding road safety, emphasizing the need for engineering upgrades and increased vigilance to prevent future tragedies.
